Cutting Room Floor Ep 06 - A Good Latin Lesson
Phil joins Chad again to discuss Augustine’s four-fold framework for understanding the things we’ve been looking at in the book of Romans the past couple of weeks. After introducing some key Latin terms (2:03), they unpack the how these terms help us better understand Romans 5-8 (4:14). They also discuss the implications of this framework for our non-Christian friends (9:26), total depravity (20:13), free will (23:40), Chad’s main hope for yesterday’s sermon on Romans 6:1-14 (29:19) and Phil’s encouragement in light of this text (32:11).
Augustine’s 4-Fold State of Humanity:
1) Humanity Pre-Fall: posse peccare, posse non peccare (able to sin, able not to sin)
2) Humanity Post-Fall: non posse non peccare (not able not to sin)
3) Humanity Born-Again: posse peccare, posse non peccare (able to sin, able not to sin)
4) Humanity Glorified: non posse peccare (not able to sin)
