Sermon Notes

Romans #13: You Are Free! (Romans 6:1-14)

Today’s Big Idea: Jesus has not only freed you from the penalty of sin but the power of sin too.

Antinomianism?

“If your presentation of the gospel does not expose it to the danger of antinomianism, you’re probably not putting it correctly. Because the doctrine of God’s free grace will always be exposed to the charge of lawlessness. Paul was charged with it. So I say it is actually a very good test of preaching. So let all of us test our preaching, our conversation, and our talk to others about the gospel by that particular test. If you’re not misunderstood and slanderously reported as an antinomian, it’s because you don't believe the gospel truly and you don’t preach it truly.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones

The Problem with Sin (vv. 1-4)

The 3 P’s (vv. 5-11)

  1. The penalty of sin ➔ Jesus has freed us - Rom 3:23-26

  2. The power of sin ➔ Jesus has freed us - Rom 6:6-7

  3. The presence of sin ➔ Jesus is freeing us & will one day free us completely - Rom 8:30

The First Commands In Romans (vv. 12-14)
Religion: “I obey therefore I am accepted.”
Gospel: “I am accepted therefore I obey.”

Response: Where are you letting sin reign in your life?

Response

After the sermon, we take some time in our service to reflect on and respond to the work of the Spirit in our lives. Here's 3 ways you can do that.

1. Prayer (for everyone)

Whatever stuff has come up for you today, you were not made to navigate this alone. Let us know how we can pray for you and support you as you seek to respond to the work of the Spirit this week!

2. Communion (for followers of Jesus)

Communion is a powerful way we can remember the gospel and rest in the finished work of Jesus.

3. Give (for those who call Fair Oaks home)

Giving is a great way for our hearts to respond to God’s generosity toward us and to help more people meet Jesus. Learn more.
